Multitudes of witchcraft accusations. Zealous magistrates and ministers. Pervasive gossip among pious Puritans about the devil's malevolent acts. Epidemic disease and economic disruption. A prolonged war waged nearby. The bare bones of the story seem very familiar to anyone knowledgeable about the circumstances of lateth-century New England.
And yet "Witchfinders" is not another study of the Salem witchcraft crisis in Essex County, Mass. Rather, Malcolm Gaskill's thoroughly researched and well-written work examines its predecessor, the great witch hunt of the mid's that began in Essex, England, as the civil war raged in the background. With the exception of a book that Gaskill, a fellow of Churchill College, Cambridge, pronounces "a clever hoax," "Witchfinders" is the only modern full-length analysis of the tragic events of -- events largely instigated by the self-proclaimed "Witchfinder General," Matthew Hopkins, who has subsequently become the stuff of legend.
Informed by wide reading in 17th-century sources of all sorts, "Witchfinders" presents to 21st-century readers a vividly drawn portrait of an alien world in which bugs and mice could become Satan's messengers, women could credibly describe having sexual intercourse with the Devil and at least people could be jailed for witchcraft. Matthew Hopkins was the son, brother and nephew of Puritan clergymen.
Although he did not follow them into the church, he began waging his own war against Satan in his home village, Manningtree. Still in his early 20's, Hopkins allied himself with the like-minded John Stearne, of Lawshall, Suffolk, who was about a decade his senior.
Stearne, visiting Manningtree on business, became involved in the case of Elizabeth Clarke, a local widow, who had confessed to associating with several unnamed witches.
In March two Manningtree magistrates, Gaskill writes, "at the stroke of a pen, unwittingly initiated the most savage witch hunt in English history" by issuing a warrant authorizing Stearne to search for other witches. Stearne then enlisted Hopkins, and the two men began the campaign that would eventually encompass much of East Anglia. Stearne and Hopkins, sometimes working in tandem and sometimes independently, rode from village to village, town to town, usually at the invitation of local officials.
They either started investigations of witchcraft or, more often, questioned women and some men already arrested for that crime.
They were paid handsomely for their time, as well as being reimbursed for their expenses. Occasionally they returned to testify at subsequent trials, but more commonly they had moved on to other places long before the accused faced judges and juries. The techniques Hopkins and Stearne first employed with Elizabeth Clarke became their signature, repeated again and again in the years to come. They enlisted a group of women to search Clarke's body for the teats at which it was believed the devil's imps came to suckle; as almost always occurred, the women found unnatural marks near her genitalia.
Then the searchers and others closely observed the suspect for several days and nights while they waited for the imps -- her "familiars" -- to appear. The widow, like the many who would follow her, was forced to sit on a stool and not allowed to sleep. Unsurprisingly, she eventually confessed that she had copulated with Satan and that he had sent her familiars, which the watchers later testified to having seen: creatures that resembled cats and dogs, a ferret, a toad and a rabbit.
What happened that night? Gaskill asks. His response is measured and certainly correct: "a deluded woman, long suspected of witchcraft and now confessed, introduced two believers and the watchers to a menagerie of pets in her dark home, an enclosed space bristling with fear and expectation," circumstances more likely to produce "sinister" than "innocuous" explanations.
In this case, as in others, Gaskill alludes sympathetically to the female sexual fantasies evident in confessions, to confessors' "lament of age for vanished youth, yearning for intimacy and kindness, indulgence in heart-fluttering seduction and abandon.
Because the investigative techniques, the characteristics of the accused and the themes of confessions recurred continually through the two years of the witch hunt, Gaskill's comprehensive narrative is understandably yet tediously repetitious. His pages are populated by ever more villages and towns suffering economic distress and divided by loyalties to king and parliament, seemingly innumerable poor widows along with a sprinkling of impoverished men in similar circumstances , neighbors with long-held grudges that manifested themselves in accusations, and judges and juries displaying varying degrees of credulity.
Only rarely do readers encounter women whom Gaskill presents differently, those who might have used malefic reputations to cow their neighbors or who actively sought to control their own lives. One therefore wonders whether the witchfinders' perspective -- their search for victims -- has inordinately shaped that of the narrator.
Even so, the book's virtues are many, among them Gaskill's superb evocation of the East Anglian landscape traversed by Stearne and Hopkins. He provides a useful account of how the writings of the Huntingdonshire cleric John Gaule and the pointed questions posed by some skeptical Norfolk gentlemen combined to end the witchfinders' power.
And he closes with a thought-provoking conclusion about his story's similarities to witchfinding in Africa and India today. England's circumstances in , he also suggests, are perhaps analogous to our own; ultimately, Gaskill declares, his is "a tale about feeling anxious and vulnerable in an indifferent world" rather than a saga of witchfinders and victims readily consigned to the past.

10 People Who Claim To Have Had Sex With The Devil
Lilias Adie died in before she could be burned for her alleged crimes. The face of an 18th-century "witch" who died in jail before she could be burned for her "crimes" has been digitally reconstructed. Lilias Adie, from Torryburn, Fife, died in while held in prison for her "confessed" crimes of being a witch and having sex with the devil.
The team believes it is likely to be the only accurate likeness of a Scottish "witch" in existence as most were burned, destroying any hope of reconstructing their faces from skulls. Presenter Susan Morrison said: "It was a truly eerie moment when the face of Lilias suddenly appeared. Dr Christopher Rynn, who carried out the work using state-of-the-art 3D virtual sculpture, said: "When the reconstruction is up to the skin layer, it's a bit like meeting somebody and they begin to remind you of people you know, as you're tweaking the facial expression and adding photographic textures.
Ms Adie had been sentenced to be burned to death but died in prison beforehand, with one theory being she committed suicide. Her remains were buried on the beach between the low and the high tide marks under a large stone. Locals had sought to weigh down Ms Adie in her grave, perhaps to prevent her coming back to haunt them. By the 19th century, scientific curiosity outweighed zombie fears and some antiquarians dug up Ms Adie's remains to study and display.
Her skull eventually went to the St Andrews University Museum, where it was photographed more than years ago. It then went missing at some point in the 20th century but the images remain and are held by the National Library of Scotland. For more check out the top selling on Redbubble. The records of her accusers paint a picture of a woman, possibly in her 60s, who may have been frail for some time, with failing eyesight.
